On Tuesday afternoon, Mattias Sigfridsson, Chief of Police in Malmö, published statistics on the number of shootings and explosions in Malmö over the past 5 years. According to statistics, these acts of violence have dropped drastically this year.

After the first seven months of the year, a total of 11 explosions and eight shootings occurred in Malmö. In 2019, 36 explosions and 34 shootings occurred.

During the five years measured in the statistics, the situation was worst in 2017. At that time, 62 explosions and 65 shootings took place.

- The situation in Malmö was very serious then. Gang problems are still serious in some areas, but we know that we have locked in many leading actors and perpetrators of violence, says Mattias Sigfridsson.

Expect setbacks

The Chief of Police believes that projects such as Rimfrost and Sluta skjut have had a major impact on the declining statistics.

- We have good methods where we feel that we can prevent many crimes. All projects are important pieces of the puzzle in our overall work, but we will certainly see setbacks in these statistics, says Mattias Sigfridsson.
