Emmanuel Macron will chair a double defense council on Tuesday morning by videoconference, the first devoted to the situation in Niger after the death of several French people in an attack, and the second to Covid-19, we learned this Monday from the 'Elysium.

Several members of the government will participate in the meeting on Niger, scheduled for 11 a.m., which the Elysee Palace announced to be held on Sunday evening, a few hours after the death of eight people, including six French, according to Nigerien official sources.

Continue the fight in the Sahel

This defense council will be held "under the authority of the President of the Republic and on the basis of information which will be transmitted by the Nigerien and French authorities", according to the Elysee.

Emmanuel Macron and his Nigerien counterpart Mahamadou Issoufou affirmed their determination to quickly "elucidate" "the circumstances of this murderous attack" and to continue the common fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel. "More than 4,500 French soldiers are deployed there in the part of Operation Barkhane.

The perpetual fear of the second wave

Scheduled in the wake of this meeting, the Head of State will chair, always from the fort of Brégançon, in Borme-les-Mimosas (Var), where he is on vacation, the defense council on the Covid-19. He had announced Thursday the holding by saying "vigilant and mobilized with our scientists, with members of the government and our caregivers" to face the increase in the number of people diagnosed positive.

The Scientific Council, which guides the government in the fight against Covid-19, warned last week that France was not immune from an uncontrolled resumption of the epidemic, and urged the French to respect the barrier measures. Several cities or metropolises, such as Paris and its suburbs, have decreed the wearing of the mask compulsory in certain open public places.
