09 August 2020Six French tourists, along with the local guide and driver, were killed by gunmen in the Koure region of Niger. This was reported by the governor of the southwestern region of Tillaberi, Tidjani Ibrahim Katiella.

The governor did not want to give more details, but according to a local source, the attack took place around 11.30 am six kilometers east of the city of Koure, an hour's drive from Niger's capital, Niamey. "Most of the victims were shot dead, a woman who managed to escape was captured and massacred. We found an empty magazine at the scene", explained the source, stating that it is unknown ". the identity of the attackers but they arrived on motorcycles from the bush and waited for the tourists to arrive ".

The area is famous as a refuge for the last herd of West African giraffes, a rare subspecies. The car in which the tourists were traveling belonged to the French aid organization Acted.
