08 August 2020A greater "health protection" is needed in the world of work as well as "access to ever more effective social safety nets, at national and European level". The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, writes this in a message on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy. "On the day that sixty-four years ago in Marcinelle saw the disappearance of 262 miners, including 136 Italians - says the Head of State -, we remember the sacrifice at work of many of our compatriots who emigrated. The day dedicated to them acquires a very high value: countless citizens Italians - in often exceptionally complex and risky circumstances - have shown self-denial and commitment in the fulfillment of their professional duties, at home and abroad ".

"If we feel the memory of what happened at the Bois du Cazier with particular intensity - continues Mattarella - it is also because in recent months the health emergency has strengthened our understanding of the expressions 'sacrifice' and 'safety at work'. The search for a the better future is the right to work in all its facets: from the possibilities of study and training to equal opportunities; from safeguarding health to access to increasingly effective social safety nets, at the national and European level. I therefore renew the deepest closeness of the Republic to the families of those who lost their lives in the workplace. Alongside the miners who disappeared 64 years ago, allow me to dedicate a special thought to the many health workers who died in recent months while providing medical care and assistance to those infected by Covid-19 . Today, as then, the sacrifice of these workers deserves the profound respect of the whole of Italy ", Mattarel comments there
