According to a compilation from the news agency AFP, the deaths in the region exceed 213,000, which is almost 500 more cases than in Europe.

Last week, 44 percent of all deaths in the world occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean.

5.3 million people have been confirmed infected in Latin America, 2.9 million of them in Brazil, where 98,500 deaths are also linked to the virus. The only country with more deaths is the United States.

The second hardest-hit country in Latin America, Mexico, recorded more than 50,000 deaths and more than 460,000 infected on Thursday, AFP reports.
