Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs of 3.6 billion Canadian dollars on the United States

Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland (Chrystia Freeland) held a press conference in Toronto at noon on the 7th local time to announce that if the United States begins to impose a 10% tariff on Canadian aluminum products on August 16, Canada will export to the United States. Canadian products levy a total of 3.6 billion Canadian dollars in tariffs. According to local media reports, the commodities that Canada may impose tariffs on the United States may include: beverage cans, tin foil, pots, tripods, aluminum products for construction, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. It is worth noting that US President Trump announced the levy of tariffs on Canadian aluminum products at a factory producing washing machines in Ohio.

However, the Canadian government also needs to negotiate with related industries to list specific US products.

In 2018, there was a tariff dispute between the United States and Canada. At that time, the origins of American goods that Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs were mainly concentrated in constituencies that supported the Republican Party.

Freeland urged the U.S. to withdraw this decision before August 16, when U.S. tariffs take effect, to avoid mutual tariffs. She also emphasized that Canada will not succumb to the practice of imposing tariffs on the United States. (Headquarters reporter Zhang Sen)
