06 August 2020 The Senate House has definitively approved with 149 votes in favor, no disagreements and 98 abstentions (Lega, Fi and Fdi), the decree law that introduces double gender preference in the regional electoral law in Puglia.

Previously the Assembly had rejected the preliminary question of constitutionality posed by the League. The rule triggers, in particular, the substitutive powers of the Government and states that in the event that two preferences are expressed for candidates of the same sex, the second preference is canceled.

The elections for the renewal of the council of the Puglia Region will be held on 20 and 21 September next.

The question of the non-application of the double gender preference in the electoral ballot still concerns also the Piedmont and Calabria Regions. And closing the general discussion on the DL, the Minister of Regional Affairs, Francesco Boccia, said: "If they don't do it, we will do it".
