French President Emmanuel Macron offered his country's support to the Lebanese people, today, during his visit to Beirut after a huge explosion at the port of the city, but said that Lebanon, which is suffering from a crisis, "will continue to drown" unless its leaders implement reforms.

Macron became the first foreign leader to visit the Lebanese capital since the blast, which killed at least 145 people, on Tuesday.

Macron said upon his arrival in Beirut that France's solidarity with the Lebanese people is unconditional, but he said that he wanted to inform some political figures about "painful facts about the internal situation."

"Other than the explosion, we know that the crisis here is serious and relates to the historic responsibility of the leaders," Macron told reporters.

"We cannot work without sharing some painful facts ... If reforms are not implemented, Lebanon will continue to drown," he added.

He referred to the reform of the electricity sector, public bidding and the fight against corruption.
