Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Wednesday 5 August an increase in support for the wine industry.

"We are going to bring the aid plan to 250 million euros for viticulture", declared Jean Castex, during a trip to the Cher, to the vineyards of Menetou-Salon and Sancerre.

"We will ensure (...) that this aid can be distributed as quickly as possible", he said in a short speech, alongside the Minister of Agriculture and Food Julien Denormandie .

An envelope increased from 140 to 250 million

The French government had already presented on May 11 a first support plan of 140 million euros, supplemented by an envelope of 30 million additional euros at the end of May.

Already penalized by Brexit and tensions with the United States over customs duties, the French wine industry, like other sectors, has been hit hard by the consequences of the health crisis linked to the new coronavirus.
