More and more people are losing their driving licenses in Sweden. During the first half of the year, 20,303 driving licenses were revoked, an increase of 10 percent compared with the corresponding period last year. Gävleborg is one of the counties where both revocations of driving licenses and the number of fined speeding drivers have increased since 2019, even though the number has been at a relatively even level for the past five years.

- I notice an increased indifference to speed rules above all, says Benjamin Sjöberg, police assistant at the intervention unit Gävle.

Many do not have a driver's license

Driving license revocations due to alcohol and drug driving have decreased in the county in recent years, but those statistics do not say everything about the prevalence of drunk driving in the county. According to the police, many people have lost their driving licenses.

- We had a case of gross drunk driving where the car bounced between the side and middle railings. When we stopped the car, it lacked rear-view mirrors and the door hung loose, says Benjamin Sjöberg.

Special problems with younger drivers

The changed view of traffic rules that the police experience applies primarily to young drivers.

- It settles down at an early age where you trim mopeds, and it lives on when you get a driver's license, says Benjamin Sjöberg.
