Ware Monday, US State Department Mike Pompeo, held video chats with Afghan Taliban political affairs chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Prader.

A spokesman for the Taliban political office, Suhail Shaheen, said that the two parties discussed the start of Afghan talks and the current situation in the country.

The two sides confirmed that completing the process of releasing the detainees was an important step to start Afghan negotiations. Shaheen added that the US Secretary welcomed the Taliban's announcement of a ceasefire during the blessed Eid Al-Adha holiday.

These talks come after the Afghan government released 317 Taliban prisoners, bringing the total of those released to 4,917.

Today, the Afghan National TV channel, Tala News, quoted the Afghan National Security Council as saying that "the prisoners will continue to be released until the total reaches 5,100."

On Friday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani issued an order to release an additional 500 Taliban prisoners, as a goodwill gesture in response to the ceasefire announced by the Taliban during Eid al-Adha.

However, Ghani stated that he had "no authority" under the country's constitution to release the remaining inmates - 400 prisoners - who are on the Taliban list because of their involvement in serious crimes.

He added that he would contact the tribal elders "Loya Jirga" soon to take a decision on their fate.

In return, the Afghan President called on Taliban militants who are fighting to topple his government to enter peace talks as soon as possible.

"The fate of the remaining prisoners will be discussed and decided upon during the negotiations," Ghani added.

For its part, the movement said it had released all the 1,000 prisoners it had pledged to Washington to release.

The Taliban had announced a 3-day ceasefire during Eid al-Adha, starting on Friday. In return, the government announced a similar ceasefire.
