The hopes for the Russian vaccine against covid-19 are high in the country. And to the American television channel CNN, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko has said that it will be approved within two weeks.

Therefore, it is planned to start mass vaccinating care staff and teachers in a couple of months.

- Russian media portrays it as Russia being at the forefront of finding a vaccine. Those responsible for development say that it is not about being first in the world. The laboratory tones it up a bit, says Bert Sundström.

"Do not know if it works"

The plans are met with some skepticism internationally, but according to Moscow, the state laboratory has conducted clinical trials and prepared paperwork to be able to register the covid-19 vaccine.

- I have looked at what can be found on what this laboratory has published. They are not in phase 3 yet so they have no idea if this vaccine works, says Matti Sällberg, professor and vaccine researcher at KI in SVT's Morgonstudion.

According to Matti Sällberg, from the data available from the laboratory, it is still too early to say whether it is good or bad.

- A vaccine should not only be safe, it should work, says Matti Sällberg.

Vaccine at the turn of the year

However, a functioning and approved vaccine against covid-19 is not out of reach.

- There are mainly four that are in phase 3 and there will be a lot of data during the autumn. The first indications that it works, ie protects against infection or disease, we will get in maybe September or October, says Matti Sällberg.

This in turn could mean that there is an approved corona vaccine around the turn of the year.

- It has never been this fast, says Matti Sällberg.
