The idea is that the link, which will be Europe's first multi-terminal HVDC (high-voltage direct-currant) link, will ensure a sustainable power supply and transmit the wind power generated in the Shetland Islands. In the long run, it will also help the UK reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids will deliver and commission an HVDC system with a multi-terminal link that provides flexibility to transfer electricity in several different directions.

- This innovative HVDC solution enables SSEN Transmission to efficiently connect and transport renewable energy and deliver clean electricity to consumers while strengthening the reliability of the electricity network, says Niklas Persson, global head of the Grid Integration business unit at Hitachi ABB Power Grids in a release.
