03 August 2020 The first national research doctorate in artificial intelligence (AI) starts with the signing of the agreement between Cnr, Sapienza University of Rome, Polytechnic of Turin, Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, University of Naples 'Federico II' and University of Pisa. "With the PhD in Artificial Intelligence Italy can become more competitive on advanced technologies", comments the Minister of University and Research, Gaetano Manfredi.

To this end, the Mur set up a Committee at the National Research Council with the task of developing the Italian strategy in higher education for AI and financed with 4 million
the Cnr of euros and the University of Pisa with 3.85 million euros in order to implement the strategy developed by the Committee to create the national doctorate in artificial intelligence.

The goal is to create a competitive system on a global scale and able not only to retain our best graduates in Italy, but also to attract talent from other countries. The PhD-AI.it will start with the academic year 2021/2022 and 194 scholarships for the discipline are already available. "The new PhD in Artificial Intelligence puts the best national skills in the system," said the president of the CNR, Massimo Inguscio.

The AI market
The market in Italy is in its infancy, but we are in tenth place worldwide in terms of number of publications and fifth in scientific impact. Artificial intelligence is the pillar of a new industrial revolution which, according to the European Commission, will have same impact of transformation on society and industry produced in the past by steam engine and electricity.

The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that by 2030 AI will lead to a 16% growth in world GDP and will have an impact on 70% of companies. Overall, the artificial intelligence market in Italy has an expenditure on technologies in the sector of a few hundred million euros per year. These data are in line with the McKinsey study on the level of 'readiness' ("AI readiness") of the various nations to use AI, which places us among the countries that currently show a 'moderate' ability to exploit the benefits economic that derive from this innovation, but with a largely positive potential, especially if the technologies will be exploited in strategic industrial sectors for the country such as manufacturing, industrial and service robotics and agri-food.
