Ansar Allah al-Houthi group in Yemen announced that its air defenses shot down an American spy plane, Sunday, off the Saudi border.

"The air defenses, thanks to God, were able to shoot down an American RQ-20 Puma reconnaissance plane," Houthi military spokesman Brigadier Yahya Sari said in a tweet on Twitter.

By the grace of God, the air defenses managed to shoot down a US reconnaissance plane, the RQ20, in the airspace of the Haradh district off Jizan with a suitable weapon.

Al-Masirah channel website today quoted the Houthi military spokesman as saying that the shooting down was documented by the military media lens.

Since 2015, the Saudi-Emirati coalition has carried out military operations in Yemen, in support of pro-government forces, against Houthi militants, backed by Iran, and who have controlled provinces, including the capital, Sanaa and Saada, since 2014.

The war, which has continued for more than 5 years, has left one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with more than 80% of the Yemeni population dependent on humanitarian aid to survive.
