If you have tried bikram yoga or aeroyoga or you are simply one of those who cannot spend a day without practicing asanas on a mat, this is undoubtedly an activity that you cannot miss. Now, if, on the contrary, you have never tried yoga but you love water sports and contact with nature, Sup yoga is also for you.

This yoga modality, which emerged approximately 10 years ago between the coasts of Miami and California in the United States, has made a name for itself in Madrid. And this summer you can practice at the Casa de Campo lake within the activities program of the Madrid Science Club.

But what benefits does it have? Apart from those that yoga already contributes and that are well known, this activity that is carried out on top of a paddle surf board requires "a higher degree of attention in our body," says Cristina de Andrés, CEO and founder from Sup yoga Madrid. «The perception of our body changes. We become more sensitive to any variation in posture and, as a consequence, it is easier to feel the compensations and deviations that we make and correct them ».

If it is already challenging to maintain balance in some yoga poses, doing it on a board that floats on an unstable medium is even more challenging. Therefore, the improvements that are achieved with regular practice are many: "The improvements are significant in strength, stability, elasticity and balance due to the changing conditions of the surface on which we work", explains De Andrés.

In addition, concentration work increases, especially if we do not want to end up in the water as a servant. “This increase in concentration produces a de-stressing effect because it does not give us time to think about the problems around us. And that makes us focus on the present moment, working body and mind at the same time, "he says.

But since not everything is work in life, fun is also guaranteed, especially if you've never climbed a paddle surf board. Cristina's classes last one hour and start at the same pier on the Casa de Campo lake. After some practical instructions on how to tackle the board, begin a walk to the place where the boards are anchored to begin the practice of yoga, surrounded, if you are lucky, by the ducks that have made this lake their home.

It is an excellent way to connect with the natural environment without leaving Madrid and can be practiced by anyone, even if they have never done Sup (Stand Up Paddle) or yoga. That yes, it agrees at least to be accustomed to the aquatic environment because the falls to the water are habitual, especially, when it is beginning. What if

If you suffer some type of injury or illness, it is better to consult before to be able to carry out the activity without any risk.

With morning and afternoon schedules, including Saturdays and Sundays, and at the price of 25 euros a class and 90 if you do four sessions, there are many options to try. But if you are still thinking about it for fear of falling into the Casa de Campo lake, De Andrés dispels any concern: «The water is clean and without problems for the development of the activity. It is green ", he explains," due to the accumulation of algae due to lack of oxygenation and heat, but these algae are harmful to us. In addition, it has oxygen supply at different points and there is a treatment plant ».

If, on the contrary, what you fear is getting hooked and not being able to continue in winter, you are wrong. When the summer season ends, this activity resumes in the pool of the Hilton Madrid Airport Hotel.

Estefanía Caño has already tried it and is convinced that it will repeat. “It is doing a sport that I like in a different way than I am used to and outdoors. And, in addition, you do not need to have done yoga previously, just want to try it. Time flies by, "she says.

Her classmate, Nina Magnusson, describes the session as "total mindfulness." "You have to be super focused on each movement to avoid falling into the water," she confesses. "The atmosphere is the best, laughing with classmates ... Also, moving over the water gives you a feeling of freedom and happiness that cannot be explained, you have to live it," he adds.

Vanesa Rodríguez is of the same opinion: «I have already booked my next session. Sup yoga is a good way to play sports in these times of pandemic. I am a little reluctant to be indoors and I feel very calm and safe with this activity »·

So now you know, if you want to practice asanas on a table instead of the floor, put on sunscreen, open your drawer, find a swimsuit or comfortable clothes and spend an hour trying something different. Your body and mind will thank you.
