  • Coronavirus. Why does Mexico have so many more cases of coronavirus than its Government reports?

Mexico overtook the United Kingdom on Friday, accumulating 46,688 deaths from Covid-19 and became the third country with the highest number of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, second only to the United States and Brazil.

The Mexican health authorities reported an increase in the last 24 hours of 688 deaths and 8,458 new infections, the largest increase recorded to date in the country, which has already accumulated 424,637 patients since the start of the pandemic. It is the sixth nation with the most cases .

According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has already surpassed the United Kingdom in deaths (46,204) and is only surpassed by the United States, with 153,268 deaths, and Brazil, with 92,475.

Regarding confirmed infections, Mexico is the sixth country in the world, behind the United States (4.5 million), Brazil (2.6 million), India (1.6 million), Russia (838,461) and South Africa (493,183 ).

The tracking mechanism in Mexico has caused controversy for being one of the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that performs less diagnostic tests on the population.

The same authorities have admitted that there is an under-registration of infections and deaths because many cases cannot be confirmed with evidence, and this Friday they reported that it is estimated that the actual number of infections is 466,948 (42,311 more than reported) and that of 48,615 deaths (1,927 more than those counted).

However, several journalistic investigations based on death certificates suggest that the number of deaths in places such as the country's capital could be double or triple that registered .

The undersecretary of Health of Mexico, Hugo López-Gatell, responsible for combating the pandemic, has always said that it is "impossible" to have the exact numbers of sick and dead of an epidemic and has defended that the health strategy must be designed based on other data, such as the transmission speed of the virus.

In a joint statement, 10 opposition governors called for López-Gatell to resign on Friday for giving "contradictory, confusing and inconsistent information . "

The use of masks to curb infections has also generated controversy in Mexico, since, despite the fact that the federal and state health authorities recommend it, the country's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, refuses to use them in public.

"I am going to put on a mask (mask). Do you know when? When there is no more corruption," the president said this Friday in response to criticism from the opposition.

Mexico, which registered its first case on February 28, closed the non-essential economy during April and May, and in June began a slow reopening by states despite the fact that the contagion curve has not been flattened.

The pandemic sank Mexican GDP by 18.9% in the second quarter of the year, a historical fall at the annual rate that impacts an economy that was already dragging more than a year of contraction.
