Facebook announced Friday the addition of licensed music videos visible directly on the network, without the need to go to YouTube, where the traffic is concentrated for music videos of singers and musicians.

The new category will be added to "Facebook Watch", and the videos can be "liked", commented on and shared like any other.

There will also be thematic lists, like on streaming services (Spotify, Deezer, etc.).

“We worked with partners in India and Thailand to build the foundation of a music video experiment on Facebook,” Tamara Hrivnak, a vice president of Facebook, said in a statement.

The planetary social network is launching this service in the United States through partnerships with publishers and labels, such as Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and BMG.

The Californian group promises premieres and exclusive content from J. Balvin, Karol G, Sebastian Yatra, Alejandro Fernandez and Caliber 50.

Music videos have been a major contributor to the growth of YouTube, Google's video platform with more than 2 billion monthly users.

The other giant of Silicon Valley is leading an aggressive marketing campaign to convince its visitors to subscribe to premium content, and assured during the publication of its quarterly results Thursday that the number of paying subscribers was increasing.

Containment measures during the pandemic have led to an explosion in digital uses, especially for entertainment, from series to music to video games.
