"The death sentence for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on points 4, 5, 9, 10 and 14 of the charge was canceled, the case was transferred to the (lower) district court for a new trial at the sentencing stage," the decision says.

In December 2018, Tsarnaev's defense applied to the Court of Appeal with a request to annul his death sentence.

In May 2015, a US jury sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was found guilty of organizing the Boston Marathon bombings, to death.

On April 15, 2013, a terrorist attack was committed at the finish of the Boston Marathon. The explosion killed three people and injured more than 200.
