Irishman Sam Bennett (Deceuninck) won the 4th stage of the Tour de Burgos in front of Frenchman Arnaud Démare on Friday by breaking free in the last kilometer to anticipate the sprint.

The Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck) kept control of the event on the eve of the final finish.

Bennett came out of the peloton at the foot of the small climb before the finish where Démare's "pitcher", the Italian Jacopo Guarnieri, slipped in a hairpin bend. The Irishman continued his effort to win by several lengths.

Démare, already second on Wednesday, settled the sprint for second place ahead of Italians Giacomo Nizzolo and Davide Cimolai after 163 kilometers.

Bennett (29), who joined the Deceuninck squad this year, has in particular several stage successes in the Giro and in the Vuelta to his name.

On Saturday, the last stage connects Covarrubias to the Lagunas de Neila (158 km), where the finish is judged after a short climb (4.2 km) but very steep (11%).
