Two people died and seven were seriously injured in the derailment of a passenger train near Soure, in central Portugal, Portuguese civil protection said Friday. This train derailed after colliding with a catenary maintenance vehicle. Civil protection also reported thirty minor injuries on its Twitter account.

The accident to this train, which was carrying some 280 passengers, occurred around 3.30 p.m. local time. This Alfa Pendular high-speed train linked Lisbon to Braga in the north of the country, passing through Coimbra and Porto, the country's main cities.

170 rescuers mobilized

On the spot, a large device mobilizing more than 170 rescuers and two helicopters was deployed to rescue the victims. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered “his condolences to the families and friends of the fatal victims” after this “serious accident” in a message posted on the presidency's website.
