The public prosecutor specified that the driver of the truck involved in the accident had been indicted on Thursday, in particular on the count of manslaughter.

The driver involved was taken into custody just after the tragedy. Police custody which had been extended and which was finally lifted on Thursday. During the hearings, it emerged “that the driver of the truck was distracted by a cable interfering with him inside his vehicle. He looked away in order to deal with it. When he raised his head, he noticed a slowdown and was not able to stop his vehicle ”, explains one to the parquet floor of Laon.

The consequences, dramatic, are known: the truck struck the vehicles in front of it, including the one in which were a woman and four children. The driver, seriously injured, could have been extricated from the cabin by witnesses. But the latter could do nothing to save the children, aged 9 to 13 years.

Indicted and released under judicial supervision

The Laon prosecutor considers it necessary to continue the investigations. Thus, a judicial investigation was opened "counts of manslaughter, unintentional injuries resulting in total incapacity for work for more than 3 months by a vehicle driver", details the prosecution. The magistrate added that the investigation would also relate to the hit and run committed by the same driver after a material accident that had occurred “a few tens of minutes earlier. "

Indicted for all these reasons, the driver of the truck was released under judicial supervision with a driving ban. The prosecutor wishes to clarify "that none of the conditions were met in this case" to place the suspect in pre-trial detention. The accused, if found guilty of the charges of his indictment, incurs a maximum penalty of 5 years imprisonment.
