It only takes a few seconds after Martin Yngerskog comes to the plate on Sergels torg in Stockholm.

- I see a sale that is going on now, he says.

When it comes to the smuggling of heroin, the market is mainly governed by the Nigerian mafia, which in turn uses poor and desperate couriers and dealers from West African countries.

The Nigerian mafia goes by the name Black Ax and established itself in Sicily in Italy during the refugee crisis. Now they are in alliance with the Italian mafia and handle large-scale smuggling across Europe. An important source of income is also human trafficking.

Through vodoo rituals, poor Nigerian women are forced into prostitution - under threat of being subjected to lethal violence by relatives.

Smuggled in via couriers

During the last six months, there has been a trial in Gothenburg District Court against 15 people who are suspected of being behind the smuggling of 132 kilos of cocaine and heroin from the Netherlands to Scandinavia. The drugs have arrived via couriers who, among other things, traveled by bus, train and ferry. The street value of the drugs is estimated at SEK 112 million.

- The organization itself, I mean, has smuggled tons into Scandinavia for a number of years, says chamber prosecutor Anna Svedin.

Prosecutors have demanded long prison sentences. Most of the accused deny the crime.

"Long way to go"

In connection with the arrests at the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, heroin availability in Sweden decreased. Prices rose temporarily. Drug scout Martin Yngerskog now sees that the problem has rather grown. He believes that priorities are needed, much more than today against the mafia, to combat the influx of heavy drugs that kill hundreds in overdoses every year.

- It is good that we the police and all other agencies are learning how to put these individuals there. That's really good. But we have an incredibly long way to go.
