Tuesday, around 3 p.m., four children died in a traffic accident on the national road 2, in the town of Laon, in the Aisne. Five vehicles were involved in this tragedy, including a heavy truck. The driver of the truck was also placed in police custody as part of the investigation under the charge of "homicide and unintentional injuries" according to the prosecutor of the Republic of Laon.
The exact circumstances of the accident will still have to be precisely determined during the investigation. However, it appears that a "heavy goods vehicle hit a motor vehicle which then caught fire," said the Laon prosecutor's office in a press release. In the car were a woman and four children, one of whom was her son and the other three nephews. The four children, aged 9 to 13, were killed and the driver, seriously injured, was hospitalized in the Paris region.
A hit-and-run after a material accident on the same day
In addition to the victim's car and the truck, three other vehicles were involved, including a van whose driver was taken into custody along with the driver of the truck. He was nevertheless released during the day on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the custody of the truck driver was extended according to the prosecutor. The first elements of the investigation, carried out by the police of Laon, revealed that the man is “involved in a hit and run committed in Soissons a little earlier following a material accident. "It also appeared that his criminal record" bears traces of two convictions handed down more than 10 years ago on charges of alcoholic driving. The prosecution adds that the blood alcohol and narcotics tests carried out after the tragedy turned out to be negative.
Judicial information must be opened on Thursday "in order to clarify the circumstances of this tragedy, carry out useful expertises and see the necessary security measures ordered," said the prosecutor.
