A chilling discovery. The police in Besançon, in the Doubs, on Tuesday found about sixty dead cats in the freezer of a resident. Each animal was wrapped with a little funeral note, reports France Bleu Besançon.

At the home of the 77-year-old man, the authorities, who had come with a bailiff, also discovered other cats. The latter, in very poor health, lived among human and canine excrement.

The septuagenarian has defended himself from any abuse, according to local radio. His weakened wife was taken away by firefighters. The town hall of Besançon is now looking for a place to welcome cats, while the SPA has launched an appeal for donations of cages.
