Increase or not? Controversies are growing over the compensation paid to elected or re-elected mayors. Europe 1 takes stock of the different strategies adopted by the city councilors, in particular RN and EELV, who often decided according to their additional mandates.

INVESTIGATION

Since the installation of municipal councils, controversies have multiplied about the compensation paid to elected or re-elected mayors. Monday, it was Lyon's turn to decide to increase the salaries of its elected officials sitting in the Metropolis. But if all are subject to a ceiling according to the number of inhabitants of their municipality, each chooses a different strategy, in particular according to the other mandates exercised.

Get more, waiving other benefits

First of all, there are those who wanted to get closer to the ceiling, like Louis Aliot, in Perpignan. The mayor Rassemblement national (RN) will therefore see his salary increase by 17%, but at the same time renounces his allowance as fifth vice-president of the Metropolis. Within the RN, the same strategy for Romain Lopez, newly elected in Moissac, in Tarn-et-Garonne. The young mayor, for his part, obtained an extension, indicating that he "abandoned" his post in the region to devote himself fully to his city.

Similar argument in Douai, where Frédéric Chéreau was re-elected for a second term. The compensation for the mayor PS has also been revised upwards by more than 1,800 euros gross per month. A sum which corresponds to his compensation for the vice-presidency of the agglomeration that he lost.

EELV mayors cut their salaries

Green mayors, for their part, have opted for sobriety. Several new city officials have therefore decided to lower their salaries. As in Besançon, Strasbourg, or even Poitiers. "For me, it was really important that there could be a maximum difference of 1 to 5 between the compensation of the mayor and that of the delegated municipal councilor since all the elected officials will be on the ground. That's why I reduced my compensation by 30%, "explained Léonore Moncond'huy, Sunday on Europe 1.

But sharing has its limits. Indeed, if the accumulation of mandates has been prohibited since 2017, the accumulation of allowances is sometimes always possible, especially when the mayor is also president or vice-president of metropolitan France, regional or departmental councilor. This is the case for all EELV mayors who have lowered their salaries.
