"The world will not be able to overcome the pandemic only by ensuring that health measures are followed, from putting up masks to avoiding crowds," said WHO Director General Tidros Adhanom Gebresos in a press briefing from Geneva.
"Wherever these standards are applied, cases of infection decline, while they rise in places where they are not applied." He praised Canada, China, Germany and South Korea for being able to control the outbreak.
Actions and efficacy
For his part, said Director of the emergency program in the organization Mike Ryan that travel procedures alone are not effective in limiting the spread of the virus. He pointed out that closing the borders between countries is not a sustainable strategy to deal with the pandemic.
He pointed out that "economies must return to work, people must resume their business, and trade must resume."
"What is clear is that the pressure on the virus is causing the number of cases to decrease. Reducing this pressure causes it to increase."
The high number of cases of the disease caused some countries to take decisions to re-impose some restrictions on travel in the past days. Britain caused confusion in the process of reopening the European tourism sector after it ordered the quarantine of returnees from Spain.
Ryan said that the current situation in Spain is not so bad as it was at the height of the pandemic there, and he expected Madrid to be able to control the hotbeds of outbreaks, but he pointed out that determining the pattern of spreading the disease in the future will take days or weeks.
"The more we understand the disease, the more we put it under the microscope ... the more accurate our ability to rid our societies of it," he added.
Numbers and tally
According to the WorldMeter website, which specializes in monitoring the latest statistics related to the Corona virus, the number of infected people reached 16 million and 451 thousand and 551 cases.
The death toll from the virus reached 653 thousand, while the number of people recovered reached more than 10 million and 73 thousand.
According to Agence France-Presse, the number of diagnosed infections reflects only a small portion of the actual number of infections. Some countries only have severe cases for tests, while others prioritize patient contact, and many poor countries have limited testing capacity.
The numbers indicate that the countries that recorded the largest number of new deaths in their recent reports are India with 708 new deaths, Brazil by 555 and the United States by 518.
The United States is the country worst hit in terms of deaths and injuries, with 147,000 deaths out of 4 million and 234,140 injuries recorded, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
A second wave
This comes at a time when countries across Asia are fighting a second wave of emerging coronavirus infection, and are taking strict measures again in an effort to contain the disease, with a record daily increase in the number of cases in Australia and the closure of Danang in Vietnam.
In China, the number of unrelated infections from overseas has risen to the highest rate since early March, with the number of domestic infections reaching 57 out of 61 new cases.

Meanwhile, South Korea has recorded more than 14,000 infections and 298 virus deaths overall. The number of new cases in it on Saturday, 113, was the highest in a day since March 31.
Indonesia is expected to register the 100,000th case today, Monday, after the country surpassed China with the highest number of deaths and deaths in East Asia.
