This is a sad record for Latin America and the Caribbean. This region of the world became on Sunday the one with the largest number of contaminations since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, or 4,340,214 cases, according to a report established from official sources. This is the first time that the number of infections has exceeded that of North America, which has 4,330,989 cases, mainly in the United States, the country most affected in the world with 4.2 million infections and nearly 150,000 dead.

Brazil has more than 85,000 dead

In Latin America, Brazil is the most affected country with 2,394,513 cases and 86,449 deaths on Saturday. An increase in contaminations is observed in Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Argentina, countries which are trying to revive their economic activity to limit the impact of the pandemic.

To limit the pandemic, in Latin America, cancellations of festivities and sporting events are increasing. The traditional end-of-year party in Rio de Janeiro, which brings together millions of spectators on Copacabana beach to admire the fireworks, has been canceled, and Sao Paulo has postponed its carnival sine die. Panama has given up on hosting the Women's Under-20 World Cup, which was due to take place in early 2021, as well as the Central American and Caribbean Sports Games in 2022.

In terms of death toll, Europe remains in the lead, with 207,933 deaths, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (182,726), and the United States and Canada (155,673).
