The deal was honored. Thomas Cook shared with his friend Joseph Feeney the 22 million dollars (just under 19 million euros) he won on June 10 at Powerball, one of the lotteries in the United States. The two inhabitants of Wisconsin had made a promise when the game was created in 1992: to divide the jackpot into two equal parts if it was won by one of the two comrades.

At the time, no written agreement had been drawn up but the oath was accompanied by a handshake, says Fox19.

A check with both names

The big winner of Powerball does not intend to withdraw anyway, even twenty-eight years after making this commitment. The check handed over by the lottery organizers was thus made out to the names of the two Americans. The latter actually each received the sum of 5.7 million dollars (nearly 5 million euros). They have indeed opted for the collection of the jackpot in one go and winnings at games of chance in the United States are subject to a tax levied after receipt of the money.

The two men say they want to take advantage of this opportunity to spend time with their respective families. Joseph Feeney was already retired when he hit the Powerball jackpot while his friend resigned after the draw. “I can't think of a better way to retire,” commented Thomas Cook, who, like his friend, plans to continue playing Powerball.
