A father and his four-year-old son died on Sunday in Chauvigny, in Vienne, when the stone post that supported their hammock collapsed on them, the gendarmerie said on Monday. The mother, injured in the arm, was hospitalized at the Poitiers University Hospital.

The 40-year-old man and his wife were dozing in the hammock in their garden shortly before 6 p.m. when their son jumped on them, allegedly shaking the two-meter stone pillar that collapsed on them. Despite the rapid arrival of help, the firefighters and the SAMU could do nothing to revive the father and his son.

The couple's other two children, aged 6 and 2, were taken in by the neighbors and then by a medico-psychological unit.
