The Algerian government decided on Sunday evening to extend the confinement for 15 days in most of the country, due to a persistent increase in cases of coronavirus contamination in recent weeks.

Partial home confinement from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., in force in 29 of the 48 wilayas (prefectures) of the country, is renewed for 15 days from Tuesday, according to an official statement.

The government has also decided to renew "the ban on road traffic, including private vehicles, from and to" these 29 regions, said the Prime Minister's services, also announcing the renewal in these prefectures of the suspension of transport. urban public and private during weekends.

According to the latest report from the Scientific Committee for monitoring the evolution of the pandemic, published on Sunday, 27,357 cases of contamination have been officially recorded in Algeria, including 1,155 deaths, since the registration of the first case on February 25.

The Council of Ministers also adopted on Sunday a draft ordinance amending and supplementing the Penal Code to better protect health professionals against verbal and physical attacks, which have grown since the start of the pandemic. .

Their perpetrators are liable to sentences ranging from one year in prison to life imprisonment, according to the statement from the Council of Ministers published by the official APS agency. The text provides for a prison sentence ranging from one to three years for "any verbal assault", from 3 to 10 years in prison for "any physical assault" and finally life imprisonment "in the event of the death of the assaulted person.
