The US special envoy to Iran, Brian Hook, said that the administration of US President Donald Trump wants an end to the Gulf rift, calling on the Gulf states to unite again to confront what he described as Iranian aggression in the region, as part of a Middle East visit to call for an extension of the arms embargo on Iran.

Hook said - in an exclusive interview with Al-Jazeera broadcast tonight in the midnight bulletin - that President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made it clear that they wanted an end to the Gulf crisis, adding that they wanted to see the Gulf speak with one voice against Iran's aggression in the region and its destabilizing activities, and against common dangers Other.

He stressed that the United States has major interests in the Gulf and these interests will continue, and therefore the President will continue to work to see if we can bridge this gap.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, along with Egypt, cut ties with Qatar in mid-2017, due to allegations related to its support for terrorism, while Doha denies these allegations and says that the boycotting states want to undermine their sovereignty.

The United States and Kuwait have sought - with little success so far - to mediate this conflict, which Washington sees as a threat to efforts to contain Iran.

"The conflict has gone on too long and ultimately harms our common regional interests for stability, prosperity and security," Hook told reporters from Doha after meeting with Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani.

Hook is touring the Middle East to call for an extension of the UN arms embargo on Iran, and for this purpose the US envoy visited Tunisia, a current member of the Security Council.

Hook will go to Kuwait soon, and raise with the Kuwaiti officials the issue of the Gulf conflict, and expressed his hope that the presence of the Emir of the country, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, 91, will not have any negative impact on the diplomatic efforts.

The Emir of Kuwait has long tried to mediate this dispute, and Hook said he believed Sheikh Sabah wanted continued Kuwaiti efforts in this area.

Diplomats and Gulf sources told Reuters that the United States is trying to persuade Saudi Arabia with its allies to reopen its airspace, which was closed to Qatar 3 years ago, but the mediation efforts that started since early 2020 have achieved little success.
