On Wednesday, a mother and her son were killed, and the father and a child were injured when a man in his 55s ran over them while they were out cycling.

It now turns out that another family was also in great danger, just before the tragic crash. The man, who is in custody, is now also suspected of having exposed that family to serious danger.

- It was another family that was close to being hit, says Kjell Janneson, chamber prosecutor in Kalmar, who is in charge of the case.

Mother with pram and two children

A mother with a pram and two slightly older children, one in her teens and one just in her teens, was out walking on the road when the man whizzed past at high speed.

- They were of course shocked. It was only inches between them and the car.

The man has now been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence in traffic, aggravated causing another person's death in two cases, aggravated causing bodily injury and causing danger to another in five cases, he says.

Awaiting test results on drug driving

However, the man is not suspected of drunk driving, and whether the man was drunk driving is not yet clear.

- We do not know it yet, samples have been taken and we get answers this week.

The man is now requested to be detained, and according to Kjell Janneson, the detention hearing will be held either on Saturday or on Sunday. However, the trial against the man will probably be delayed.

- My guess is that it will take at least a month before it can start. There is a lot of technical research to be done, says Kjell Janneson.
