The carillon consists of 47 bells in mixed sizes that together span 3.5 octaves. The youngest weighs just over two tonnes and the smallest is a lightweight of eleven kilos.

- 3.5 octaves means that you can play very deep down in and very high up in the register, says Lars Tillenius, one of five bell players who today is responsible for the notes that sound from the town hall tower.

Västerås' first bell player was the cathedral organist Hugo Melin. He trained his successor Åke W Eriksson, who was a bell player until 2006.
