A 52-year-old French teacher living in Indonesia was found dead Friday morning in the village of Peyriac-de-mer, in the Corbières Maritimes, near the Mediterranean coast, we learned this Saturday from a source close to the investigation . Her husband, of American nationality, arrested at the last minute in the boarding area of ​​Toulouse airport, admitted the facts, said the prosecution.

During police custody, which was extended, the man admitted "the facts by indicating that he had stabbed his wife twice", Laure Kruger, said prosecutor Marie-Agnès Joly in a statement. “Given the couple's usual place of life in Indonesia, it is unknown to the investigation services and the French judicial authorities, in particular for domestic violence”. The husband will be presented Sunday to an examining magistrate for his indictment.

The Franco-American couple had for about three years an apartment in this village south of Narbonne, where they lived a few weeks a year.


Alerted by the town hall, the gendarmes quickly found that the victim's personal belongings had "remained at the couple's second home", according to the press release. The body of the victim, "hidden in a rainwater outlet, on the public road 150 m from the marital residence" was then quickly discovered by the gendarmes.

“The checks made at Toulouse Blagnac airport will reveal that the husband has boarded a flight to Jakarta alone and is about to take off. Immediately contacted by the gendarmerie, the air and border police arrested the man at the end of the morning while he was in the boarding area of ​​Toulouse airport, ”according to the prosecutor. Subsequent investigations will be carried out by an investigating judge responsible for clarifying in particular the context in which the facts took place, according to the prosecution.

This case brings to at least 40 the number of suspected feminicides since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP count. In 2019, AFP identified at least 126 cases of women killed by their partner or ex, or a woman every three days on average.
