A Chinese investigator accused of hiding her ties to her country's army to obtain a U.S. visa was arrested after taking refuge in the Chinese consulate in San Francisco , a senior U.S. official announced Friday.

The US Department of Justice reported Thursday the indictment against four people for "visa fraud" by "lying about their membership in the Chinese military." Three of them had already been arrested.

"One of these people fled until last night, after finding refuge at the San Francisco consulate," a department official said Friday.

The detainee, Tang Juan , is a specialist in cancer treatments and had been working since January in a laboratory at the University of California. According to the indictment, investigators discovered photos of her in uniform , establishing that she worked for a Chinese military hospital.

"He is in police custody and will appear for the first time in court later in the day," added the department, which declined to give details of the arrest .

According to the official, the cases of economic espionage "are only the tip of the iceberg." This case, in fact, takes place in a context of intense tensions between China and the United States.

Washington gave Beijing three days on Tuesday to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, accused of being a "center for espionage and theft of intellectual property." Chinese authorities on Friday ordered the closure of the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, in the southwest of the country.
