International third-line wing Michael Hooper is said to be "very proud to continue" to captain Australia, despite the arrival of new manager Dave Rennie, who has yet to make his decision.

"I am very happy to have been captain of this country and I would always be very proud to continue to be. I would be happy to take on this role if given to me," said Hooper, 99 appearances with the Wallabies including 46 as captain, at the microphone of the Fox Sports channel.

"I didn't talk to Dave about this because I think it will come with time. If I'm a captain I would do the best I can to be the best and if not I would do best possible to help the team, ”added the 28-year-old.

Earlier in the year, he lost the Australian Waratahs franchise armband at club so he could concentrate on his game.

New Zealand Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said last month that "Hooper is a strong candidate for captaincy."

"But we haven't made a decision so far. There are a lot of good leaders in this group," Rennie added.
