  • Investigation: shadows and errors about the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils

The Prosecutor's Office of the National Court has claimed a total of 85 years in prison for the three Islamists who will be prosecuted for their relationship with the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils (Tarragona) on August 17, 2017, in which 16 people and others died. 140 were injured. The Ministry asks for a total of 85 years in prison.

The harshest petition in the indictment is addressed to Mohamed Houli , a survivor of the explosion that occurred in the house in Alcanar (Tarragona) in which the terrorist cell was preparing explosives. The 41 years in prison claimed correspond to crimes of membership of a terrorist organization (12 years), manufacture and possession of explosive substances with a terrorist character (15 years) and conspiracy to commit a crime of terrorist ravages (14 years).

For Driss Oukabir , brother of one of the dead terrorists, he asks 36 years for those same crimes. In both cases, the maximum effective compliance under the Penal Code would be 20 years. Finally, for Said Ben Iazza he asks for eight years as a collaborator of the terrorist cell.

None of the three was prosecuted as the perpetrator of the attacks, whose perpetrators died in the Tarragona explosion or by shots fired by the Mossos d'Esquadra. Despite them, other popular accusations and private individuals do plan to directly accuse them of the attacks.

A key magnet

Prosecutor Ana Noé's indictment begins by explaining that the main defendant "was part of a local criminal cell following the postulates of the Islamic State terrorist organization, Daesh, gathered around the figure of the deceased imam who was from the communities The Fath and Annour of that population, Abdelbaki Es Satty. " The deceased imam was responsible for indoctrinating the group.

The members of this cell were all young Moroccans residing in the town of Ripoll, brothers or who had known each other since childhood. Three months before the attacks, the cell began to buy materials to make explosives, accumulating between 200 and 500 kilos of explosives, in addition to 104 butane cylinders and 19 homemade devices.

"At the end of May 2017, coinciding with the Ramadan festival, Youssef Aalla , Younes Abouyaaqoub and Mohamed Hichamy called Omar Hichamy , Mohamed Houli Chemial , Said Aalla , Moussa Oukabir and Houssaine Abouyaaqoub to a meeting in a park in Ripoll, where They communicated that they would need their help to destroy the Sagrada Familia and other emblematic monuments of the city of Barcelona with explosives that they were going to prepare, "states the document, according to Efe.

For this, he adds, "they proposed to use rented vans loaded with explosives together with butane cylinders, to achieve a greater blast wave, as well as tube bombs filled with shrapnel, like grenades, and explosive vests."

At that time, Es Satty carried out a search on the Manchester attack and another on "explosives manufacturing courses for beginners".

Varied objectives

In early July, searches began for possible targets: reservoirs, such as those in the Cambrils area and in the Riudecanyes swamp, churches in Valencia, Zaragoza air base , Alhambra in Granada , the Tomatina festival in Buñol , and the National Court. They were also interested in celebrating the match between Barça and Manchester United on July 27, and in the Spanish Super Cup between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Houli recorded the terrorists Mohamed Hichamy and Younes Abouyaqoub in the Alcanar chalet while they were preparing the explosive devices that they intended to use in an upcoming attack against the "enemies of Allah", in which they threaten the Mossos D'Esquadra, while they issue proclamations of loyalty to the Islamic State.

Between August 12 and 16, Mohamed Houli and Youssef Aalla sold stolen jewelery in shops to cover the cost of buying butane cylinders for the attack.

At 11.16 pm on August 16, an explosion occurred in the Alcanar chalet, where the cylinders accumulated, killing Es Sattyy and Youssef Aalla, while Mohamed Houli Chemial was wounded. The following day, Younes Abouyaaqoub headed with the Fiat Talento van towards the city of Barcelona, "where at around 4:50 p.m. he joined Las Ramblas from Calle Pelayo, close to Plaza de Cataluña, entering at high speed and zigzagging along the non-passable central promenade "," running over the people who walked there ".

Inside the van were the passport of Mohamed Houli Chemial, the NIE of Younes Abouyaaquob and the rental contract for the van named after Driss Oukabir. As for Said Ben Iazza, the document maintains that the positions of his phone place him at different times in the Alcanar chalet and with members of the cell.
