We knew about Brexit, “Frexit”, or even “Grexit”. And here is the "Italexit". This is the name of the sovereignist party that Senator Gianluigi Paragone has just launched on the other side of the Alps. This ex-television journalist wants to get Italy out of the European Union by drawing inspiration from the United Kingdom.

His announcement comes two days after his meeting in London with the leader of the Brexit party, Nigel Farage, and in the wake of the European agreement found to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. "Membership (to the movement) will only grow, at the same rate as the lies that Europe tells us", declared the elected this Thursday during a press conference organized in the Chamber of Deputies. In an interview with the daily La Repubblica , he said on Tuesday that "the European citizen does not exist", predicting "the coming collapse" of the EU.

A population disappointed but not disgusted

“Most Italians don't want to leave the EU. Only around 30%, or even 40% at times, say yes to a departure, ”political scientist Renato Mannheimer told AFP. This figure increases slightly for the Italians in favor of the abandonment of the euro zone but "I do not believe that the party of Gianluigi Paragone can constitute a large enough public for the exit of Italy", he affirmed. .

For the expert, the perception of an initial failure on the part of Europe to respond quickly to the crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic in Italy has disappointed the population. But since then, support for the EU has increased. The € 750 billion stimulus package approved Tuesday by EU leaders, much of which is intended to support the peninsula's economy, is expected to further strengthen that support, according to Renato Mannheimer.

Former member of M5S

Gianluigi Paragone, who has had links in the past with the League of sovereignist Matteo Salvini, was elected with the M5S but left the anti-system party shortly after taking part last year in the formation of a government which allied the M5S and the Pro-European Democratic Party.

The M5S and the League have both toned down their anti-European positions in recent years to attract more moderate voters.
