• Emocracy: how the Puritan left governs the dictatorship of emotions
  • Stories: If everyone is a fascist, what do we call the true fascists?

She is, successively, and without a continuity solution, anti-cishetero poet, macro-feminist militant, anti-fascist healer, ecosexual guerrilla, organizer of vegan buffets against discrimination against squirrels in Botswana, metaprogressive Juana de Arco, ultra-patriarchal egg-player and priestess of the Holy Power of the Menstrual Cycle.

His verbal scalpel drains our endemic racism, fights toxic masculinity, drowns all our horrible sins and shivers the Ominous System. It saves us, in short, from our own miseries.

Her name is Titania McGrath and, although she has chorromil followers on Twitter (543,000, more specifically), she doesn't really exist.

In other words, it only exists in the head of Andrew Doyle , a former professor of Renaissance Poetry at Oxford turned into a screenwriter, humorist and comedian, who ran into her (always mentally) "in April 2018", to laugh at "a specific type of social justice activist: those upper-middle-class white people who are nonetheless convinced they are oppressed . '

Titania suddenly emerged as a caricature of those hordes of salon altermundistas , of the reactionary progressivism of this time, one more of the ideological tumors of these strange moments ... And it even became reality, for part of that same public who follows her, in a true anti-system heroine.

"Yes, the truth is that there are those who interact with her and follow her as if she were real, believing the character," admits Doyle amusedly - translation: even laughing at this type of militancy is difficult given his tendency to satirize himself-. "There are those who accuse me of creating a straw man and that nobody gets to say the outrages that Titania says ... If that were the case, nobody would take seriously the things that she says: but in reality some do take her seriously", he alleges.

Thus, Titania's (reverse) invectives against puritanism now lead to a book that reaches the Spanish market and is titled Woke (Ed. Alliance), which comes to mean something like Awake : this is how Titania claims to be, while the rest of us are still abused.

The volume brings together the character's crazy ideology with two obvious claims: on the one hand to amuse, on the other hand, to dismantle the puritanical and ideological ideology, in Doyle's opinion, of that new upper-class progressivism - his Titania studied at expensive universities and spent the summer in the Maldives before taking the side of the most disadvantaged - to whom he opposes a liberalism no less furious, although inclusive.

This is how Doyle draws that, let's say, extreme center in which he is situated (everything is extreme today), answering the question of what aspirations he believes to be legitimate in that progressiveism that he criticizes: “There are many legitimate struggles at the heart of the ideology of justice social, many. I share your belief that we need to oppose racism in all its forms and support the vulnerable. The problem with these activists is that they misunderstand everything and end up sponsoring the people they are trying to defend , especially when they are offended by them »

And here Doyle points to the true vein that attacks his satire: «They also promote identity ideologies, which only generate division. So while well-intentioned, they are actually regressive. I am with the liberals. I reject both far-right racists and far-left activists . "

The supporters of this social justice are the thugs of today in the networks, nobody dares to contradict them

Andrew Doyle

Titania is part of the latter, and the book definitively highlights the current intolerance that originates, explains Doyle, on that left retrograde caviar: "Satire is very effective in undermining authority, the problem is that activists of social justice they still think they are the ones from below, although the institutions, the cultural ones and even those that make the laws dominate ».

But let's let her talk, she is eager. Who are you really, Titania? "I am a radical intersectional poet committed to feminism, social justice, and peaceful armed protest," she defines herself in Woke . “In recent years I have become a leading figure in slam poetry recitals . For those who do not know what slam poetry is, it is like ordinary poetry, but with more pauses. At the end, a lactose-free buffet is usually served ».

This is the stick of the character and this is how the first chapter begins, very connotatively titled My fight (others are entitled The power of the pussy, Ecosexuality or Suck me the hashtag ). "There are times when my own talent scares me," continues Titania herself. “Sometimes when I read my work, I can't help but conclude that I am the only artist worth mentioning today . I have a unique capacity to remove the intolerance of contemporary western culture with the linguistic scalpel.

Narcissism, as you can see is another of the great targets of the book, which comes to be a kind of long printed blog full of vitriol against the current ubiquitous fascism (everything that is not in that pseudo-progressive navel is automatically and disgustingly fascist, as we know).

“Identitarianism dominates the scene because many people tend to fall into sects, ideologies are comforting because they free you from the obligation to think. Thinking costs, "says Doyle, with that arrogant point sometimes so British. «The supporters of this social justice are the thugs of today in social networks, whoever is not like them is afraid to speak and that's what Titania is about. They are thugs and nobody dares to contradict them ».

Supporter of Brexit - "the EU is undemocratic, pro-corporate and ultra-liberal" -, Doyle is definitely part of the long tradition of British power satire ... Perhaps falling a bit into similar mechanisms to which he denounces: "Exaggeration is An important satirical tool, when it comes to Titania I am happy exaggerating, although even its most ridiculous phrases end up being replicated by real activists. In October, for example, I tweeted: 'White parents! If you really want to prove that you are not racist, send your teenage daughters on an unaccompanied hiking vacation in the northern tribal regions of Pakistan. ' Two weeks later, Forbes magazine published an article titled: 'Why Pakistan should be on the wish list of all women traveling alone.' ”

Reality always exceeds the fiction.
