The Prisoners of Conscience account for detainees in Saudi Arabia said that it had been confirmed that the authorities had arrested 3 writers and activists since the beginning of last Ramadan because of their lamentation of the reformer, Dr. Abdullah Al-Hamid, who died in prison.

According to the account, the authorities are holding the writer Aqel Al-Bahli, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Dakhil and the activist lawyer Sultan Al-Ajmi.

The "Prisoners of Conscience" account referred to some of what the three wrote on social media platforms as an expression of their grief over the death of Dr. Abdullah Al-Hamid, who is described as the sheikh of the jurists and reformists in the Kingdom.

They had expressed their condolences to his family, talked about his exploits, and one of them indicated that he had spoken to Al-Hamid on the phone days before his death and said that his voice was "tired."

Al-Hamid died as a prisoner on Friday morning, April 24 - corresponding to last Ramadan, as a result of what Saudi human rights organizations abroad said was deliberate medical neglect.

He had suffered a stroke and entered into a coma, but the authorities did not allow his release despite his age of seventy.

Al-Hamid was one of the most prominent advocates of reform in the Kingdom and one of the founders of the “Decision” reform project. He was arrested several times during his career, the last of which was in March 2013, and he was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.
