Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed confirmed today, Wednesday, that his country has successfully completed the first phase of filling the Renaissance Dam.

Abi Ahmed said in a statement on the Ethiopian television: "We have successfully completed the first stage of filling the Renaissance Dam without disturbing us, or harming anyone."

On Tuesday, Abi Ahmed had said that his country, Egypt and Sudan had reached a "common understanding" that would pave the way for an agreement. He explained that the rainy season contributed to the end of the first stage of filling the Renaissance Dam.

The three countries participated in a virtual African mini-summit yesterday, hosted by the President of the African Union and South African President Cyril Ramafuza. The summit focused on negotiations on the dam.

Ethiopia denied last week that it had started filling the dam without an agreement with Egypt and Sudan, and later said that the high water levels were due to rain.
