Late on Tuesday evening Swedish time, Donald Trump resumed his daily press conferences on the coronavirus after a break of several months.

The background is said to be that the president listened to information from adviser Kellyanne Conway that the opinion figures have fallen since the daily updates ended at the end of April.

"Wear a mask"

The main message during Tuesday's press conference, which was relatively short compared to several previous occasions, repeated the changed line that was already hinted at on Monday when the president tweeted a picture of himself wearing a face mask.

The question of whether or not to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of infection has become a highly politicized issue in the United States - and Trump has on previous occasions been reluctant to do so. As recently as May, Trump ran with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for wearing a mask.

The recommendation to the American people to wear a face mask came as early as April - but the president was then clear in emphasizing that it was voluntary, and that he himself did not intend to do so.

Changed posture

During today's press conference, the tone was different.

- We urge everyone who can not practice social distancing to wear a mask, regardless of whether you like it or not. They're doing good, Trump said.

He also urged young Americans to avoid crowded bars and other crowded places.

Throughout the conference, Trump also referred to the coronavirus as the "China virus" - something he has done and been criticized for on several previous occasions.

The crisis is not over

The United States has been hit hardest in the world by the corona pandemic, with just over 3.8 million cases of confirmed infection and more than 141,000 dead.

Trump stated during the press conference that the situation "unfortunately will get worse before it gets better."

-I do not like to say it, but that's how it is.
