Since July 20, Ikea will offer meatballs that taste like meat but are intended for vegetarians. This new dish is made from vegetable proteins. The dish contains pea protein mixed with yellow peas, onions, potatoes, oat bran, dehydrated apples as well as water and grape seed oil, according to a press release from the brand.

With this new recipe, the Swedish firm wishes to offer an “affordable alternative to those who seek to reduce their meat consumption, without giving up the taste experience” thanks to “more healthy and sustainable products”.

A smaller carbon footprint?

Due to their plant composition, the carbon footprint of these meatballs would correspond to only 4% of those that contain meat, according to Ikea. This culinary innovation is not, however, a first for the Swedish brand. When it launched in India in 2018, Ikea had already made the choice to adapt to the local culture by offering chicken meatballs as well as vegetarian meatballs instead of traditional beef meatballs.

Thanks to its catering service, the company said it served 2 million customers per day in 2017 for 1.7 billion euros in turnover worldwide, or 5.3% of total sales, relates Capital .
