Will doubts about the 2016 American presidential election reappear during that of November 3? Democratic officials will do everything this time to explode the scandal before the election, if there is a scandal. The US Congress "seems to be the target of a campaign" of disinformation orchestrated from abroad, thus assured Monday these officials very "concerned" by these efforts which they believe aim to influence the outcome of the November vote.

"Specific, serious" and "persistent" threats

House Democrats Leader Nancy Pelosi and three of her colleagues expressed their concerns to Federal Police Chief Christopher Wray a week ago, asking him to inform elected officials of Congress before the parliamentary recess August. In their letter, which they decided to make public on Monday, they mention “specific, serious” and “persistent” threats, but do not provide any details. An attachment containing classified information accompanies their letter, but remains confidential.

The four signatories are part of a group of eight parliamentarians with the highest credentials to access sensitive information. The four Republicans who are members of this group did not join in their approach.

Foreign interference aims according to these Democrats "to propagate and amplify inaccurate information in order to influence the activity of Congress, public debate and the presidential election." The four parliamentarians ask the head of the FBI to send them a timetable, with a view to a closed-door briefing of all parliamentarians as soon as possible. The FBI for its part confirmed having received this letter, but did not want to say more.

Joe Biden turns to threats

Accusing President Donald Trump of not doing enough to fight this interference, his Democratic presidential rival Joe Biden threatened Monday: "I warn the Kremlin and other foreign governments (...) If a foreign government tries to interfere in our democracy, I will not hesitate to respond as president to impose lasting and substantial costs ”.

U.S. intelligence services all accuse Russia of interfering in the 2016 presidential election, including using hackers and massive social media campaigns, to promote Donald Trump's candidacy and embarrass his rival Democrat Hillary Clinton, which Moscow has always firmly denied. Once elected, the Republican president was the subject of a lengthy investigation into suspicions of collusion between his campaign team and the Kremlin, without any evidence being uncovered.
