The news of the cacique Raoni is reassuring. The iconic defender of the environment and indigenous peoples of Brazil presented an "improvement" in his state of health on Monday and should be released "soon" from the hospital, according to his latest medical bulletin.

Its release could be Wednesday

The 90-year-old leader of the Kayapo people suffers from "two gastric ulcers and an intestinal infection", but "his clinical condition has improved," said the Dois Pinheiros medical establishment in Sinop, in the 'State of Mato Grosso (Center-West), where he has been hospitalized since Saturday. "He has just told me that his doctor will allow him to go out on Wednesday," even declared enthusiastic Gert-Peter Bruch, president of the French NGO Planète Amazone, after briefly speaking on the phone with the cacique.

Raoni was first admitted Thursday to Colider hospital, also located in Mato Grosso state, before being transferred on Saturday to a better equipped facility in Sinop. "His general state of health is good, he is clear-headed, has no fever and has controlled blood pressure," said doctor Fernanda Quinelato. “Two blood transfusions were necessary to control anemia caused by the digestive bleeding from the previous days,” she added.

The cacique with the famous labial plateau has been in a depressed state since the death of his wife Bekwyjka on June 23 from a stroke. Bekwyjka was his partner and advisor for more than 60 years.
