Javi Calleja will no longer be Villarreal's coach next season, the fifth-placed La Liga club and Europa League qualifier announced on Monday, with Spanish press announcing the arrival of former Paris manager SG Unai Emery.

"Javi Calleja is no longer the coach of Villarreal CF. The club would like to thank him for his work, dedication and professionalism during his tenure as coach and wish him good luck in his sports career," the team said. of the Valencia region in a press release.

Former Paris SG and Arsenal coach Unai Emery is slated to replace him according to the Spanish press.

This is the second major departure for Villarreal in two days after that of iconic midfielder Santi Cazorla, 35, who will continue his career in Qatar at Al-Sadd.

Calleja, 42, a former Villarreal player, arrived at the head of the "Yellow Submarine" at the end of September 2017. In his first season, he won fifth place in the championship and qualified for the C3.

In the following year, the results were less good and he was dismissed in December 2018, while Villarreal was relegated. But less than two months after his ouster, he was recalled and allowed the club to continue.

This season, thanks to the team's strong results after resuming La Liga in June, Calleja repeated her first-year performance with a new fifth place finish.
