20 July 2020 Classical music in the background, one last hug before the leap into the dark, now convinced that without him and his wife, both seriously ill, his daughter would have had no future. The dramatic gesture of Gualtiero Gualtieri, a 74-year-old retired journalist, nighttime voice of the Swiss radio, who last night decided to kill himself with the car's exhaust gas together with his blind 31-year-old daughter, matured in this picture from birth, in their country house in Saltrio, in the province of Varese. Near their bodies - as told by Ansa - the investigators found the farewell message of the man, engraved on a box and intended for his wife, unaware of the anguish that gripped her husband.

Gualtieri, who for years conducted successful programs for RSI, had discovered that he was suffering from a serious tumor that would have left him no way out. Her slightly younger consort has been struggling for years with a degenerative disease that forces her to bed. Their only daughter, Gea, was suffering from birth from a very serious pathology that had also made her blind and totally dependent on her parents.

Probably destroyed by the serious family situation, convinced that for their "child" there would be no future without them, the man planned the tragic gesture. With the excuse of accompanying his daughter to attend a classical music concert, which she liked so much, yesterday morning he kissed his wife in the forehead and drove directly to the house where he grew up, on the border with Switzerland. Once there - Ansa always writes - he parked the car in the garage, inserted in the CD player a compilation made of those symphonies that his daughter Gea loved to listen to, and decided for both that their life would end there.

Stunned by sleeping pills, father and daughter fell asleep in the garage, side by side, while the carbon monoxide from the car's exhaust pipe killed them. The gruesome discovery was made by Gualtieri's granddaughter who, called by her aunt worried that she had not heard her husband and daughter returning home last night, rushed to Saltrio this morning to look for them. The carabinieri of the Varese Investigation Unit and the coroner who was able to certify the deaths intervened on the spot. The Varese prosecutor ordered an autopsy.
