Washington and Minsk mutually recalled ambassadors in 2008; currently, embassies are led by temporary attorneys. 

In February, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Belarus and held talks with Lukashenko and Foreign Secretary Vladimir Makei. The parties confirmed their readiness to exchange ambassadors.

Makei noted that the return of ambassadors to the capitals of the two countries after a 12-year break will contribute to the development of relations. At the same time, he emphasized that Minsk would not be "friends with anyone against anyone."
