An investigation was opened into the circumstances of the death of a 29-year-old Algerian, transported to the hospital after his arrest Sunday in Belgium in Antwerp, we learned this Monday with the police and the prosecution of the Flemish city.

The man, whose arrest was videotaped and circulated on social networks, was behaving aggressively in a cafe on Sunday midday, said Antwerp police spokesman Sven Lommaert.

Arrested, put on the ground and handcuffed before help arrived

According to the spokesman, he "was trying to hit people, was very agitated". When the police arrived, they found that he had a head injury and appeared to be "under the influence" of narcotic drugs, he said.

The police overpowered the man, knocking him down and handcuffing him, and called the emergency services, who arrived a dozen minutes later, the spokesman said.

When the medical services arrived, the man was no longer responding, the same source said. The paramedics resuscitated him and transported him in critical condition to the hospital, where, despite an intervention, he died between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., the source said. The prosecution said it had opened an investigation into "the exact circumstances of the arrest and death" of this man, who according to the police lived in Brussels.

In the images posted on Twitter, a man is seen lying on his stomach, held by the police in front of the terrace of a cafe. They are often shared with the keyword "murderinantwerp" (murder in Antwerp) and "justiceforAkram" (justice for Akram), in a context of increased sensitivity of public opinion following the death in May in the United States , by George Floyd, a dead black man asphyxiated by a white police officer during his arrest.
